Someday Happens

Someday happens. We saw that phrase on what probably was a homemade T-shirt at an inauguration event this week. And it gave us hope. It reminded us that perhaps the most powerful 45 words in the U.S. Constitution, the 45 words of the First Amendment, are the best possible tools for change and progress. Those 45 words guarantee freedom for all Americans from a government that tells us what to say or print, whether and how to worship, with whom we can gather, and how we can ask for change. More than 200 years later, those foundational freedoms of speech, press, religion, assembly, and petition continue to challenge us to live up to the expectations of those who came before us and make someday happen for those who will follow.

Landmark changes in public education like Brown v. Board of Education, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, and Title IX are the direct result of the First Amendment. They came about only when parents and educators, community leaders and politicians used those five freedoms to advance dreams of "someday." There are those who would say that someday has already happened for children of color, yet too many still encounter the barriers of discrimination and poverty and a near return to separate and unequal. Others would say that someday has already happened for children with special needs in America, but a someday of full funding and support for special education remains elusive. And children all over the world who face harassment for their race, their religion, their family structure, their sexual orientation, their learning challenges, or for no reason at all, still wait for someday.

» Today we use the power of those 45 words, those five freedoms, to launch a petition for the whole child. We ask you to sign and share it with others so that they too might speak. Print it, and use it to launch your own community activism. Perhaps most importantly, live the words in your daily actions for children in your community. Someday can happen. Make it today.

Make Someday Today

Today we launch the Whole Child Petition to ask your state board of education to support policies and practices that ensure each student is healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged. Help your state reach the goal of 1,000 signatures, and we will deliver the petition to your state board of education. And if you live outside the United States, contact us about how you can launch your own petition campaign.

We're on the record. How about you?

“What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility—a recognition, on the part of every American, that we have duties to ourselves, our nation and the world, duties that we do not grudgingly accept but rather seize gladly, firm in the knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, so defining of our character than giving our all to a difficult task.”

—President Barack Obama in his Inaugural Address
