I Saw the Future on a Snow Day

Whenever I think about personalized learning, I drift toward the ways adults learn. We know what we like, how we remember things, the topics that interest us, and the best ways to absorb new information. It's easy for us. I know I'm a kinesthetic learner so I recall things much better if I'm active. For example, I like to listen to audiobooks and podcasts while I'm running, doing yard work, or driving because I remember a lot more when I associate a passage or new bit of information with what I was doing at the time. But students don't have the years (decades) or experience to know what works for them—they're still going through trial and error and as adults, we need to give them every chance they can get to play around with their own learning.

Are We Providing Safe and Supportive Environments for Each of Our Students?

Recently ASCD's Educational Leadership staff were contacted by a reader who, while doing research, came across an article from the December 1992/January 1993 issue on students at risk that struck close to his personal experience. He wrote,

Having come from an abusive home and just recently graduated, I think this needs to be read by every educator. I grew up middle class, and was a very "bright" student. I was beaten regularly, and I had many of these markers. I remember trying to tell a teacher about my situation, and her laughing me off. I have dealt with my issues, but I was hoping you could somehow market or re-publish this article, although it was originally published 20 years ago. I believe it needs to be seen.

How Do We Help Each Student Succeed?

We help students succeed by personalizing instruction to meet the needs of the learner. This may seem like a daunting task because it takes front-loading at the beginning of the year and ongoing progress-monitoring. Teachers can design activities and assessments that focus on personal interests, strengths, and academic standards. When teachers personalize instruction through various assessments, it is easy to find the "tools" that motivate students to be successful in the classroom.

Personalized Learning: A View from the Factory Floor

Personalized learning seems like such a perfect model of teaching and learning. In fact, "student-driven, competency-based learning that can happen any time, anywhere" seems too good to be true. As teachers we read about schools implementing personalized learning and we immediately turn to utopian dreams of working there and teaching that way. Soon after, we realize we don't teach in that school and lament "if only ..." We pinpoint reasons why the personalized learning models portrayed in the articles would be impossible within the confines of our school or district still based on the factory model. In the interest of our students we must move beyond that kind of thinking. Fortunately, we can if we keep our ideals in mind and work with what we have. We simply need to shift the conversation from all the reasons why we can't completely personalize student learning, to how we can make learning more personal.

Broader than individualized or differentiated instruction, personalized learning is driven by the learner. Ensuring personalized learning for all students requires a shift in thinking about long-standing education practices, systems, and policies, as well as significant changes in the tools and resources. To address students' abilities, interests, styles, and performance, schools need to rethink curricula, instruction, and technology tools to support giving learners choices and schools flexibility.

In this episode of the Whole Child Podcast, host Sean Slade, director of ASCD's Whole Child Programs, speaks one-on-one with professor and author Yong Zhao. Zhao is an internationally known scholar, author, and speaker whose work focuses on the implications of globalization and technology on education. He has published more than 100 articles and 20 books, including Catching Up or Leading the Way: American Education in the Age of Globalization. He is an elected fellow of the International Academy for Education and currently serves as the presidential chair and associate dean for Global Education in the College of Education, University of Oregon, where he is also Weinman professor of technology and professor in the Department of Educational Measurement, Policy, and Leadership.
