Updates from the Grade Your School and Community ToolIt's time for a progress report from the Grade Your School and Community Tool! Over 4,000 individuals have graded their schools and communities, with California, Illinois, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas logging over 150 entries each. Arkansas and Washington lead the way with more than 85 percent of their responses coming from policymakers. The good news is that 84 percent of respondents say that families are welcomed into their children's education and that behavioral expectations and routines are followed. Respondents also indicate that most children have access to a supportive adult at school. The bad news is that more than 50 percent of respondents say they don’t have a school health advisory council, and less then 40 percent feel that their school district offers multiple ways for students to show they have met graduation requirements. » How do your school and community score? Are your students healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged? Take the quiz today, and then use the results to engage others in conversation about the whole child. Expect More. Get More. |
Real Stories"At Detroit Community High School we are attempting to balance the mandates of NCLB with the education of the 'whole child.' This is no small task as we attempt to meet the needs of our urban youth. Finding the balance between the academic, artistic/social, and practical/ hands-on is an unending process. An education of the head, heart, and hands is critical for developing well-rounded youth who are confident in their ability to learn in any setting. Not only would we add the three Rs of rigor, relevance, and relationships to the Michigan Department of Education's goals for high school redesign, but we would also add the three Es of excellence, encouragement, and engagement to that list." —Bart E., Detroit, MI » Click here to see the rest of Bart's story and many more. |
