Making the Grade

What can we expect from President-elect Obama? Will he bring about positive change? How will his administration impact education for all children? We all have these kinds of questions, and many of us have high expectations for the answers. But perhaps we should be asking ourselves what we are prepared to do to bring about the change we're awaiting. Are you committed to working with the new administration, the new Congress, and state and local policymakers to improve public education in your community? What can you do to move your community toward providing the necessary elements to develop the whole child?

We are starting this new year with a firm conviction that it takes every one of us to create the change that our children need. We are committed to providing you resources that will support you and your community as you work to ensure that each child is healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged. The Grade Your School tool will help you start moving your community toward this goal by providing a snapshot of your community's strengths and weakness. Today, we are unveiling an upgrade to the tool that offers additional feedback, resources, and next steps tailored to your answers. These specific suggestions will help you continue your progress, whether your school and community are struggling to meet the needs of the whole child or celebrating your whole child successes.

Can We Really?

The Forum for Education and Democracy unveiled a campaign Tuesday to support young people and improve public schools through collective action. In addition to the 'Yes We Will' Web video paying homage to Obama's campaign slogan, "Yes, We Can," the campaign has set in motion a national petition drive asking signers to commit to working with President-elect Obama to honor the rights of each child to a 21st century education, equal access to high-quality education, well-supported teachers, and high-quality health care.
