Physical Education Program Helps Get Students Active and Interested in Sports

Wellington Primary School, Singapore

Since 2007, Wellington Primary School has offered students the opportunity to participate in the Sports Education Program (SEP) for students. In 2009, the school expanded SEP and implemented the Holistic Sports Education Program (HSEP) for all students. The program, comprising 6 modules, was integrated into the Physical Education and Health Education Curriculum. The aim was to provide students with opportunities to make use of skills and knowledge learned during their PE and HE lessons in fun and interactive sports activities. Competitions were planned to nurture sportsmanship and develop life-long learners in sports. As a result of the program, Wellington Primary was awarded the Singapore Health Promotion Board CHERISH Platnium Award for helping student's develop greater interests in sporting activities. Program results revealed evidence of stronger, more vibrant sporting culture within the school, as well as greater student achievement outcomes in several sporting activities.
