Washington State ASCD has selected Hidden Creek Elementary School as the winner of its State School of Character Award. This Port Orchard, Washington school works to ensure that each child is developing not only academically, but emotionally and socially as well. This is accomplished through character education modules and an academic program that is customized to meet individual needs. At Hidden Creek, staff members believe in the aptitude for success in every student, and they strive to help the students meet their goals every day. The school combines supportive programming and goal setting exercises to keep its students on the path to success.

Mullenix Ridge Elementary School has been chosen to receive a Washington State ASCD Supported Students Award. The emphasis in this Port Orchard, Washington school is to enable all students to pursue their passions through the encouragement of mentors and keen awareness of individual development. Staff members work together to ensure that every child receives the necessary support and interventions to achieve their potential. This sense of teamwork carries over to the students as well, who participate in extracurricular activities such as the kindness club in order to perpetuate the welcoming school environment.

Minnehaha Elementary School, located in Vancouver, Washington, joins other top schools in receiving Washington State ASCD’s Safe School Award. The efficacy of a unified effort by Minnehaha staff and administrators to provide a secure learning environment can be seen in a significant drop in disciplinary referrals and an overall sense of comfort among the students. Respect for others is central and anti-bullying efforts and clear behavior expectations provide students with the framework they need to enjoy their own sense of safety and ensure that it is replicated for others.

Outreach Programs Bring a Community Together

Washington State ASCD has awarded Madison Elementary School the Safe School Award for 2012. As Title I School in Olympia, Washington, Madison has many programs in place to ensure the success and safety of its at-risk populations. The school is considered a “safe harbor,” thanks in large part to the implementation of Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS), which uses decision-making techniques to address behavior concerns. Madison also maintains a multitude of outreach programs, strengthening bonds with parents and the community through family learning nights, a community garden, and partnerships with other schools and nonprofit organizations.

Opportunity Elementary School—winner of the Healthy School Award from Washington State ASCD—is no stranger to overcoming health challenges. Located in Spokane, Washington, the school has implemented a variety of programs to teach healthy choices to its students, the majority of whom are disadvantaged. Opportunity staff members take a holistic view on health for their students, pairing mentorship and tutoring programs with healthy eating seminars. By partnering with faith-based organizations, college groups, and the local food bank, the school provides its students and their families with the skills and resources necessary to lead healthy lives.

Rural School Uses the Arts to Challenge Students

This rural school has strategically challenged students with an arts integration curriculum and enrichment programs such as foreign language, violin, 3-D sculptures, guitar, and dance that challenge students to “think outside of the box.” Teachers work tirelessly to provide classes that are strategically designed to enrich students in all subjects. A proud parent writes that while students are learning the arts, they are also expanding their math and vocabulary skills. Larne provides an enormous menu of learning opportunities to widen student horizons, advance intellectual thoughts, and expose students to a plethora of atypical education experiences.
 

Suburban School Provides a Safe Environment for its Students and Staff

This suburban school is dedicated to providing a safe environment for its student body and staff through multiple trainings and professional development sessions. Beck Shumpert, director of kindergarten and children’s ministry at Seven Oaks Presbyterian Church, reports that parents send their children to school knowing that this safe and supported environment is a lighthouse for families in the community that provides children with opportunities and programs that positively influence children's academic successes.
 

Suburban School and Community Encourages Students to Live Healthy Lives

Hendrix IB Elementary School, Boiling Springs, SC 

"This suburban school provides programs that promote healthy eating, stress reduction, cardiovascular fitness, and personal and social responsibility. After-school Zumba workouts numerous community resources are available to families and provide support for a healthy lifestyle. Project Fit America, a national nonprofit public charity dedicated to getting kids fit, is integral to supporting the school in reversing the lack of fitness in children and in teaching children to take personal responsibility for their health.

Rural School Uses Arts Integration to Engage Students

Cannons Elementary School, Spartanburg, SC

This rural school engages students in arts integration curriculum that is embedded in daily classroom learning experiences.   Engagement continues with the collaboration of community artists who provide opportunities for students to experience live ballet, creative writing, art, dance, and a variety of other activities. Cannon uses arts integration to deliver instruction in all content areas across grade levels. The work of students hangs alongside the work of professional artist in the lobby of the school, further showcasing the engaged learner. This faculty seeks best practices that will engage the academic needs of all students.
