Segue Institute for Learning received the 2014 Rhode Island ASCD Whole Child Award for its work to engage the community in all aspects of its programs. The school has exemplified what it means to engage the community by embracing the involvement of its community partners and families to help support their students. Furthermore, they support their students through student driven advisories that revolve around culturally competent and engaging activities. Curriculum is geared toward success in high school and includes service learning, performance based assessment and portfolios. In addition, the health education curriculum includes social/emotional dimensions. Congratulations Segue Institute for Learning for this great honor!

Harnessing Leadership Potential to Keep Teens in School

Fontana Unified School District, Fontana, Calif.

Fontana Unified School District, located in Fontana, California, has been awarded a grand prize grant in whole child partner National School Board Association’s 2013 Magna Awards. The district has developed and implemented the Fontana Leadership Intervention Program (FLIP). FLIP, which is directed at middle and high school students, offers students a variety of classes ranging from ethics to drug and alcohol resistance. The program also requires participation in community projects and seminars for parents as well. This multifaceted outreach has already made a visible difference in behavior issues at both the middle and high school levels.

Technology and Student-Centered Strategies Promotes Digital Citizenship in Students

North East Independent School District, San Antonio, T.X.
 

North East Independent School District (NEISD) in Texas is an American Association of School Librarians’ (AASL) 2011 National School Library Program of the Year (NSLPY) Award recipient. To create lifelong learners at NEISD, the school library program works to “model and promote the effective integration of technology and student-centered strategies to support the access, use, evaluation, and creation of information; and model, teach, and practice the ethical use of information in order to promote good digital citizenship in students, teachers, and the community.” Along with skills to evaluate information, technology skills are embedded into the core content areas when teachers and school librarians collaborate to design lessons. Products of these lessons incorporate various presentation tools, including podcasts, slideshows and videos. This allows students to not only complete their work, but share it with others, like their parents and peers, by posting it on classroom or library blogs.
 

Collaborative Partnerships Key to Community Success

Henrico County (Va.) Public Schools received an American Association of School Librarians' (AASL) National School Library Program of the Year (NSLPY) Award in 2011. Collaborative partnerships are the key to the Henrico program’s success. “Parents, central office personnel, school board members, feeder schools, and the business community are constituents that all have a stake in successful students,” read the application submitted by Henrico’s educational specialist in library services, Ann M. Martin. “Our model is based on an all-inclusive approach, with students and staff at the center of the circle and each succeeding circle encompassing more of our stakeholders. When a library activity occurs, we include as many stakeholders as possible.”
 

Strong Policy and Community Collaboration Speak Volumes

Grand Forks, N.Dak.

A four-time winner of whole child partner America's Promise Alliance's 100 Best Communities for Young People recognition, Grand Forks, N.Dak., strives to evoke positive action through strong policies and community collaboration.

Practices like the Grand Forks Youth Commission, composed of students from middle and high schools who express their voice about community issues; the PASS and Interventions programs, which use innovative approaches to assist in responding to student challenges; and the Grand Forks Helping Hands Summer Camp, which helps young people understand the importance of volunteerism as they provide opportunities for a wide range of children, are all positive change agents that will continue to promote leadership and service among all generations.

Diversity and mobility have set the stage for the city's ability to provide a multitude of youth-related services that range from mobile food programs, which ensure provisions to youth without transportation, to the Pierce County Bookmobiles that provide educational resources to youth who come from low-income or isolated areas. With more than 200 members of the Lakewood Community Collaboration continuing to address the needs of youth and the wealth of youth involvement in their community, Lakewood is a symbol for positive change.

At-risk youth can always rely on the New Beginnings Center to provide care, supervision, and treatment for abuse or mental health difficulties, while the Almost Home Program provides transitional living. Kids Konnection is a program designed to promote and maintain positive interactions with significant adults in children's lives, and Activate Aberdeen strives to tackle childhood obesity through a weight reeducation program.

Academically, students always have support as they strive for success: throughout high school, each student has a personal advocate who provides personalized attention.   • The Weed-n-Seed Initiative has led to the development of programs to reduce the number of youth in juvenile justice and improve youth health.
  • The City Year Young Heroes is a service-learning program that serves as a platform for middle-grades students to understand important social issues while giving them the chance to positively influence their communities.

  • Child Care Resources provides scholarships for low-income youth to participate in fee-based programs.
  • The Forest Service allows students to learn about the wilderness and take advantage of its proximity to the community.
  • Graduation Matters Missoula is a recent partnership whose focus is to ensure that the whole community plays a role in keeping students in school. Its goal is to achieve a 100 percent graduation rate through promoting academic reentry or completing General Education Development requirements.
