Library Keeps New Jersey School on the Forefront of Change and Growth

Pennsylvania Avenue School, located in Atlantic City, N.J., is an American Association of School Librarians' (AASL) 2013 National School Library Program of the Year Award (NSLPY) recipient. Through collaboration with administration, teachers, parents, and students, the school library helps to build a school environment that is globally interactive, safe, flexible, and innovative in every way. Together the administrators and school librarian have worked to build an exemplary school library program that showcases the Pennsylvania Avenue's 21st century learning by providing state of the art digital technologies for students to learn and use and help school educators stay on the front line of change and growth. The dedication of the school administrators alongside the school librarians helps to ensure efficient, effective, engaging, and empowering instruction for every student and the differing abilities of each student is embraced and respected.

Open High School—designated a MindMatters school by whole child partner Principals Australia Institute—s a school like no other. Centered in Randwick, Australia, the school specializes in languages via distance learning. Nearly 2,000 students from both public and private schools have the opportunity to choose from 103 courses in 13 languages that are not available to them in their local schools. Aside from language offerings, Open High School is committed to providing an emotionally supportive learning environment for all of its students and staff.

Empowerment Strategies Show Students How to Lead

Principals Australia Institute, a whole child partner, has designated Bowden Brompton Community School as a MindMatters school. Located in Brompton, Australia, Bowden Brompton provides educational and emotional support for students who require a nontraditional learning environment. The school emphasizes leadership and empathy through anti-bullying strategies and empowerment programs, such as MindMatters’ Youth Empowerment Process (YEP). Bowden Brompton has seen considerable improvements in attendance, focus, and literacy since the school began implementing MindMatters techniques.

District Makes Global Citizenship a Core Value

Derry Township School District, Hershey, Penn.

Derry Township School District has been awarded a grand prize grant in the 2013 Magna Awards by the National School Boards Association, a whole child partner. The district—located in Hershey, Pennsylvania—has developed and implemented the COCOA Principles program, which teaches students to be respectful and responsible global citizens. The COCOA Principles are community, opportunity, citizenship, ownership, and academics. Derry Township students who exemplify these principles are nominated for awards and high school students must select one as a central theme of their graduation projects.
