Guei Lin Elementary School, Chiaya County, Taiwan

Guei Lin Elementary School is located in the rural area of Chaiyi County. The students mostly are from families of single-parent, skipped-generation, or interracial marriage (44%). The vision of the school is “Sustain health, Guei Lin sunshine”, in hoping that each and every one excels in health. The school is especially focused on issues such as safety, fitness, and mental health. Life skill teaching Is the main component, followed by a safe physical environment and respectful social environment as supplements, which use integrated resources from health authorities and guidance from the school, parents, and communities. The school health focus has seen positive outcomes, the incidence of accidental injuries has reduced from 1.3 incident/year to 0.52; students with suitable bodyweight has achieved 60% and above; students happiness index has reached 90%; with no reported school violence. Guei Lin Elementary School has won the excellence award in the annual evaluation of Chaiyi County for 3 consecutive years, as well as the Gold medal award in 2012 Health Promoting School International Accreditation from the Health Promotion Board, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

Dagang Elemantary School, Tainan, Taiwan

Tainan Municipal Dagang Elementary School, which was founded in 1988, currently has 44 classes and 1201 students. The school has been dedicated to school health promotion and has received numerous awards, including the 2012 Health Promoting School International Accreditation Gold medal from the Health Promotion Board, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

The school's key to success lies within 11 major aspects:

  1. Establishment of a school health committee (interdisciplinary teams, regular meetings, formulate plans into school calendar, and implementation)
  2. Integrating health issues into school curriculum so that teaching and activities can complement one another
  3. Comprehensive implementation in the 6 dimensions (school policy, physical environment, social environment, community relationships, and personal health skills)
  4. Collaborate with local hospital/community resources to form partnerships and broaden participation
  5. Perform a statistical analysis to examine program performance and encourage staff to participate in research
  6. Hold an award ceremony to reward excellences: “white teeth and bright eyes awards”, “healthy fitness awards”, and “reaching BIM standards award”
  7. Raise awareness and participation with parents and communities through the publication of school newsletters and media
  8. Quality control and seek excellence: execute plans in accordance to principles.
  9. Learning through observation and experience sharing: encourage staff to take training courses and to share knowledge by making and sharing reports in meetings
  10. Establish a dental health center: Treatment station, dental chair, complete hardware. Resident dentist Dr. Wang has been a volunteer dentist for over 20 years.

Promoting Health, Seeking Excellence, Moving toward the World

Tai-An Elementary School, Taichung City, Taiwan

Tai-An Elementary School participated in 2012 Health Promoting School International Accreditation, and was awarded with Gold Medal by the Health Promotion Administration, Ministry of Health and Welfare. The school promoted health by applying diverse strategies in six aspects: school policy, physical environment, social environment, teaching activities, health service, and community relationships. School administrative, parent, and community resources were also incorporated to further implement these strategies.The school principal strongly supported the program, by infusing the initiative within the school faculty and staff, issuing evaluations within the schools and community, and subsequently formulated school health policies. In addition, the school focused on providing a suitable, improved and controlled environment for teaching and learning—to emphasize holistic health and create a supportive social network toward health promoting schools. Through the design of diverse activities and the integration of related fields and subjects, the effectiveness of curricula was therefore maximized comprehensively. Moreover, the school nurses also played essential roles in the integration of health activities into all departments, and in the implementation of community services outside of the school.
