Promoting Health, Seeking Excellence, Moving toward the World

Tai-An Elementary School, Taichung City, Taiwan

Tai-An Elementary School participated in 2012 Health Promoting School International Accreditation, and was awarded with Gold Medal by the Health Promotion Administration, Ministry of Health and Welfare. The school promoted health by applying diverse strategies in six aspects: school policy, physical environment, social environment, teaching activities, health service, and community relationships. School administrative, parent, and community resources were also incorporated to further implement these strategies.The school principal strongly supported the program, by infusing the initiative within the school faculty and staff, issuing evaluations within the schools and community, and subsequently formulated school health policies. In addition, the school focused on providing a suitable, improved and controlled environment for teaching and learning—to emphasize holistic health and create a supportive social network toward health promoting schools. Through the design of diverse activities and the integration of related fields and subjects, the effectiveness of curricula was therefore maximized comprehensively. Moreover, the school nurses also played essential roles in the integration of health activities into all departments, and in the implementation of community services outside of the school.

Kaohsiung Industrial High School, Kaohsiung City, Taiwan

Established in 1942, Kaohsiung Industrial High School is dedicated to offering a comfortable, secure, and pleasant learning environment that ensures every student and staff member obtains sound developments in mind and body. The administration actively implements health-promoting programs on sanitary policy, material environment, social environment, health education curriculums, community relationships, and health services. The school offers more than 30 student sports clubs, which offers holistic campaigns to help enhance not only their physical fitness but also their emotional, social, spiritual and cultural fitness. Moreover, Kaohsiung Industrial High School has been awarded a 2012 International Accrediation of Health Promoting School from the Health Promotion Administration, Ministry of Health and Welfare for its continued efforts to carry out life education, moral education, family education,  and depression and suicide prevention education that equips students with a healthy and supportive school campus.

Washington State ASCD has selected Hidden Creek Elementary School as the winner of its State School of Character Award. This Port Orchard, Washington school works to ensure that each child is developing not only academically, but emotionally and socially as well. This is accomplished through character education modules and an academic program that is customized to meet individual needs. At Hidden Creek, staff members believe in the aptitude for success in every student, and they strive to help the students meet their goals every day. McLoughlin Middle School joins other top Washington schools in receiving the Supported Students Award from Washington State ASCD. The school’s family community resource center serves as a central access point for the numerous support services offered in the area, from free school supplies to dental care. Fresh off of a 3-year school climate study, Wanniassa prioritizes student health and wellbeing through both in-school programming and external wellness training for student ambassadors. The effect of these initiatives can be seen in a dramatic drop in suspensions in just two years, as well as in academic benchmarks.

Staff members meet every two weeks to discuss the mental health and wellbeing of the student body, and health education modules pertaining to mental health issues have been incorporated into the curriculum. The sense of common understanding and support makes St. Stephen’s a comfortable and accessible environment in which both students and staff can speak freely about these issues.

Dubbo School of Distance Education has been designated a MindMatters school by whole child partner Principals Australia Institute. The school, centered in Dubbo, Australia, provides individualized distance education options for students in preschool through 12th grade who are either unable to attend a face-to-face school or are pursuing a course of study that is unavailable at their local school. The flexibility that Dubbo provides allows students to receive a quality education that is tailored to their personal needs and lifestyles. Most notably, Dubbo has worked to improve access to mental health resources for its students and their families, helping them gain necessary support outside of the learning environment.
