Safety, Fitness, and Mental Health are this School’s Focus

Guei Lin Elementary School, Chiaya County, Taiwan

Guei Lin Elementary School is located in the rural area of Chaiyi County. The students mostly are from families of single-parent, skipped-generation, or interracial marriage (44%). The vision of the school is “Sustain health, Guei Lin sunshine”, in hoping that each and every one excels in health. The school is especially focused on issues such as safety, fitness, and mental health. Life skill teaching Is the main component, followed by a safe physical environment and respectful social environment as supplements, which use integrated resources from health authorities and guidance from the school, parents, and communities. The school health focus has seen positive outcomes, the incidence of accidental injuries has reduced from 1.3 incident/year to 0.52; students with suitable bodyweight has achieved 60% and above; students happiness index has reached 90%; with no reported school violence. Guei Lin Elementary School has won the excellence award in the annual evaluation of Chaiyi County for 3 consecutive years, as well as the Gold medal award in 2012 Health Promoting School International Accreditation from the Health Promotion Board, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

School Organizes to Be Proactive, Not Reactive

Recognized as a MindMatters School in 2011 by whole child partner Principals Australia Institute, Wagga Wagga Christian College is a coeducational K–12 school which fosters a family environment that develops responsibility and trust between peers and multi-aged young people. In 2007, the faculty determined the need to develop a welfare system to be proactive and responsive, not reactive. As a result the school has refined its transition programs, building stronger links with parents and the community beyond the school; expanded its student leadership program, empowering students at all levels of leadership; and implemented resilience programs, highlighting the safe use of social networks, cyberbullying, and sex education and relationships. Feedback is sought at parent association meetings about the mental health and well-being programs that could be implemented for students and parents.

Improving Well-Being and Learning Environments in the Middle East

Ramallah, Palestinian Territories, West Bank

Elham Palestine is a nationwide program extending throughout Gaza and the West Bank that aims at improving the physical, mental, psychological, and social well-being of Palestinian children and enhancing their learning environments to become more conducive for their well-being. The program seeks to recognize, develop, and create resources for the educational system from inspiring initiatives implemented by dedicated principles, counselors, teachers, and students. Elham utilizes a participatory approach which engages the youth, local communities, and a multi-stakeholder partnership that includes governmental and non-governmental organizations.

Elham is the Middle East setting of whole child partner Learning for Well Being and the principles and framework developed by the Universal Education Foundation. Learning for Well-Being seeks to promote child well-being across not only Europe and the Middle East, but also across each society. It focuses on all sectors of that society—health, mental health, social affairs, as well as education—aiming to influence policy development in and across each with regard to child well-being.
